Frequently Replaced Auto Parts

The most frequently replaced parts on your car depend on the vehicle itself, the primary kind of driving you do (city vs. highway), how often you drive it, and what kind of climate you drive it in. All of us living this far north have to replace our tires, wiper fluids, and batteries a little more frequently than those living in the South.

All that being said, there are still some parts that all drivers, regardless of where they live, will need to replace first or more frequently than others, and it's important to know which parts specifically to better maintain your vehicle in both the short and long term. Below, you'll find some of the most frequently replaced parts, in order from most frequent to least.

Oil and oil filter. These need to be changed every 3 months or 3,000 miles, whichever comes first. Very affordable and free in some places, so there's no reason not to.

Windshield wiper blades. Consensus varies between every 6-12 months or in some cases, every 1-2 years. In any case, they wear down fairly fast and you want the best wipers to clear your vision in bad weather.

Air filter. Change this every 30,000 miles, or more frequently if you often drive on gravel and dirt roads.

Brake pads. This can vary significantly based on driving habits. Heavy cars and city-driving contribute to higher brake wear. Try replacing these every 30,000 - 50,000 miles.

Battery. It should be changed about every 5 years, but you can get away with doing so less often if you live in a particularly warm region. You're looking at $150 at the most.

Tires. It's hard to place these anywhere specific on this list. Racecars go through sets of tires in less than an hour, sometimes in mere minutes, so it's evident that your driving style will affect this more than most of the other parts. Try for every 5 years or every 50,000 miles. Aligning your wheels will help reduce tire wear as well.

Accessory drive belt. Try to change this every 50,000 miles as well.

It'll likely be about 100,000 miles before you need to change anything other than these.
